Hi Everyone,
Thought I'd let you know what some members of the Robertson Academy have been up to lately.
At the behest of the Italian Government and at the invitation of Jamie Gibb of Shiehallion Pipe band, we joined with the London Scottish pipes and drums and the Trinity Occasional Pipers from Edinburgh to make up a massed band. The purpose of the trip was to assist in the commemoration of the last battle of the 1st world war at Treviso on the river Piave. It was the 90th anniversary of the battle and had never been fully commemorated before, so they wanted to make it a truly memorable event. They succeeded and some. It was an honour and a humbling experience to acknowledge the sacrifice made to hold the line at Ponte de Piave. The Gordon Highlanders were part of that defence and it was moving and heartbreaking to see the ages of some of the boys who's final resting place was in the shade of the mountains and amongst the poppy fields that line the Piave. We were welcomed and feted by the Italian people and the officials were consideration itself. The presentations made to each band were beautiful and a touching acknowledgement of our participation. Most humbling and at the same time such an honour, was the wonderful gesture of the museum at Gavera, where our names were recorded in clay and displayed in the museum there.
Everyone from Peter, president of the pipes & drums, Nobby and Jim, the pipe and drum majors of London Scottish, Jamie of Schiehallion and all the guys from Trinity, right down to all us lowly grunt drummers were really friendly and always helpful and encouraging, it was a grand trip, which I for one would do again in a heartbeat. Thank you to those Robertson Academy members who came, I was so imensely proud of you, and a thank you to all who were there, it was great to meet such a great group of people and an honour and a privellige to have played at such a prestigious event with you all. My final thank you is to Andrew, our liason and interpreting officer, a nicer, more considerate man would be jolly hard to find. You were a star, and a joy to meet.
I genuinely hope to see you all in the future.;
